In Europe it can rain a lot; what would we do without an umbrella? But where does the umbrella originally come from? The first parasols were used in ancient times, and the word "parasol" means “against the sun”. Later, in the 18th century, the umbrella followed and derived from the French word "parapluie" which means “against the rain”. The umbrella as we now it know, was designed by the British metal worker Samuel Fox.
